A Once-in-a- Lifetime Journey
This expedition to the Arctic will be guided by legendary biology Professor Ken Clifton, who has taught at Lewis & Clark for more than 20 years. The voyage has been tailored for an intrepid group of Lewis & Clark alumni, family, and friends. On our route, we will see massive glaciers and ice caps and majestic wildlife such as polar bears.

Alongside Professor Clifton, we will be joined by highly experienced Arctic experts and expedition leaders who will present lectures and hands-on workshops ranging from marine wildlife, ecology, climate change, photography, and the history of the various locations we visit. Travel in style aboard one of the most luxurious vessels in the polar regions—M/V Hondius—which utilizes leading technological innovation to get you closer than ever to snowy peaks, colossal blue glaciers, and roaming icebergs. Enjoy gourmet meals, tastefully appointed décor, and as many landings as possible on this all inclusive voyage. Our ship is also one of the most environmentally friendly at sea, using a clean-burning hybrid electric-hydro propulsion and anchor less positioning systems. All cabins feature luxurious amenities, free unlimited wifi, flatscreen TVs, and pristine ocean views.

Itinerary
Aug 7
Pre-Night in Longyearbyen

Fly into Longyearbyen, the vibrant administrative hub of Spitsbergen, and the largest island in the stunning Svalbard archipelago. Transfers to your hotel will be provided for the 13:55 and 17:00 flight arrivals. Once checked-in, recharge and rejuvenate in our accommodation, Funken Lodge, before a welcome dinner that starts at 7:30 pm.

Aug 8
Longyearbyen

Take time to explore this charming town. Professor Ken Clifton will provide a presentation about the Arctic and we look forward to a lot of group participation. You’ll find plenty to see and do, from visiting local museums and galleries, to enjoying a bite to eat at one of the cozy cafes before meeting in the hotel lobby. Around 2pm, we will head to the port and prepare to set sail. By the time you board the ship, you’ll be ready to explore the Arctic wilderness.

Aug 9
Krossfjorden

Arrive in the morning to Krossfjorden, where you will board the Zodiacs for a cruise near the towering blue-white face of the Fourteenth of July Glacier. You’ll be sure to spot plenty of epic wildlife! After an exciting morning, you’ll sail to Ny Ålesund, the northernmost settlement on Earth set to a backdrop of glaciers and mountains.

Aug 10
The seven islands

The northernmost point of your voyage may be north of Nordaustlandet, in the Seven Islands. Here you’ll reach 80° north, just 540 miles from the geographic North Pole. Keep your eyes peeled for polar bears and walruses as we sail among pack ice. Professor Ken Clifton will answer your questions about polar bears and more.

Aug 11
The great glacier front of Schweigaardbreen

We continue pushing on to Nordaustlandet, where the focus is the great glacier front of Schweigaardbreen, though you may also land at Firkantbukta, getting the chance to gain some altitude and take a few higher-elevation photos.

Aug 12
Ice cap at Kvitøya

Today we’ll try to reach the rarely visited Kvitøya, far to the east and close to Russian territory. The enormous ice cap covering this island leaves only a small area bare. You’ll land at the western tip of Andréeneset, where the Swedish explorer S. A. Andrée and his companions perished in 1897.

Aug 13
The longest glacier in Spitsbergen

South of Nordaustlandet you may land on Isisøya, formerly a Nunatak area surrounded by glaciers, but now an island surrounded by the sea. You then may pass by Bråswellbreen, part of the largest ice cap in Europe and famed for its meltwater waterfalls. Professor Ken Clifton will take up issues related to how Climate Change is impacting the region.

Aug 14
Barentsøya’s many bounties

Potential stops today on Barentsøya include Sundneset (for an old trapper’s hut), Kapp Waldburg (for its kittiwake colony), and Rindedalen (for a walk across the tundra).

Aug 15
Land of the pointed mountains

Start the day by cruising the side fjords of the Hornsund area of southern Spitsbergen, taking in the spire-like peaks, followed by navigation of massive ice bergs and the opportunity to spot more incredible wildlife.

Aug 16
Bell Sund

Today you find yourself in Bell Sund, one of the largest fjord systems in Svalbard, and where you will have the opportunity to enjoy both history and wildlife – including the very real possibility of spotting some belugas!

Aug 17

Post-Night in Longyearbyen

Return to Longyearbyen for disembarkation at 9am. A transfer will be ready to take our group back to the hotel for those who choose to utilize the complimentary post night at Funken Lodge. Professor Ken Clifton will lead an easy hike nearby. Local activity suggestions will be provided.
