Jessica Kleiss
Climate Scientist & Associate Professor of Environmental Studies
I found my home in Oceanography and Atmospheric Science: the rich natural world that surrounds us with swirling eddies, layers of clouds, crashing waves, and meandering rivers of water within giant oceans. As a visual learner, I became interested in developing image processing techniques to investigate the fluid earth using digital images, video, and satellite images. I am particularly looking forward to exploring together the oceans and ice formations of the Antarctic region.
My dissertation work investigated wave breaking in the deep ocean. We evaluated the motion, energy and momentum of whitecaps as the wind blew offshore from the Pacific coast of Southern Mexico — conditions similar to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.
I also did postdoctoral work on the influence of the Gulf Stream on satellite observations of wind velocity over the ocean.
I have been a faculty member in the Environmental Studies department at Lewis & Clark since 2012. Some of the courses I teach include Environmental Analysis, Environmental Engagement, Situating Environment Problems & Solutions, Spatial Problems in Earth System Science, Climate Science, and Oceanography.
